Hummingbird Moth Video
I’ve gotten some lovely comments on this post about hummingbird moths. It makes me smile reading shares from other gardeners that they, too, have seen these beautiful moths in their garden. But it occurred to me that perhaps some of you haven’t had a chance to see one yet or maybe you have and weren’t sure what it was! So yesterday evening I trailed after a hummingbird moth that was visiting our butterfly bush and he obligingly allowed me to videotape him. Apologies–again–for the less than stellar camera work. I promise these videos will get better!
it looks like a flying fussy shrimp.. 😀
Now that’s a new one on me, but you know what? Pretty darn accurate.
Have not ever seen one of these! Thanks for posting the fun video!
Thank you Barbara! It’s lovely to have you here.
My new home was built on property that was once a botanical garden. As an avid gardener I was delighted to see what might vist my own garden and discover some new and exciting species of birds and insects. Tonight while watching the sun set I observed at least 10 of these hummingbird moths feeding on my lantana and mexican petunias. I really thought they were hummingbirds too until I checked them out on the internet. I am always thankful and thrilled by little creatures visiting my garden.
Hi Lorraine, I don’t know how I missed this comment. Wonderful story! Your garden sounds like it’s very beautiful.
beautiful ahven’t seen one in some time
last time I had Ruby throated & the moth that looked very like
a ruby throat
I saw one in my flower bed and I really thought it was a tiny humming bird. Beautiful is the only word I have to say for it. I took a zoomed in picture of it, but sorry to say it blurred. I am so happy to know what it is. Thank you so much.
Hi Shirley, thank you for your visit! Aren’t they such magical creatures? 🙂
I saw the hummingbird moth for the first
time yesterday. I was so excited also
because I thought it was a hummingbird.
After observing it hovering over my red
flowers, I realized it was an insect and
not a bird. I too feel so lucky to have
seen this intriguing creature.
I just seen these this week on my flowers. Had to look it up! So glad I now know what they are. So fascinating to watch. Not as shy as hummingbirds. So you can really get a good look!!!!
We spent the day at Noccalula Falls in Gadsden, AL. While playing putter golf we saw & made pictures of one pollinating a butterfly bush. It was totally amazing and so fast it was difficult to photograph – and didn’t think to video.
Thank You for posting this video… we’ve been been seeing these little creatures for about 3 years; we thought they were Humming Birds but something about them was off. Now we know! They aren’t ‘birds’ at all, but Moths! Thank you for solving our mystery!
my pleasure! thank you for stopping by! 🙂
I live in San Jacinto County, Cleveland, Texas. I was amazed the first time I seen one that seem to love my 4 o’clocks. The most I have seen at 1 time is 3, usually only 1 or 2. They come out shortly before dusk and feed well into the night, at least I have seen them feeding at 9:30 or 10 pm, which surprised me. Has been about 5 or 6 years now since I first discovered them. I always look forward to their return.
This is great. We have lived in our house 16 years and this the first time we have seen them. We live in St Croix Co Wi. Thanks for the post.
Did you know if you watch them at night feeding their eyes glow in the dark
Washington County, Brenham, Texas. We sighted a hummingbird moth for the first time last night. It was feeding on the flowers of a potted lemon tree on our patio. We too thought it was a baby hummingbird until we got closer and saw it was some sort of insect. We were so excited to find this sight and name for what we saw. Interesting to see everywhere these little darlings have been sighted. Cannot wait to see if it comes back tonight.
