‘Gartendirektor Otto Linne’ Shrub Rose

Gartendirektor Otto Linne 2 Gartendirektor Otto Linne 3Gartendirektor Otto Linne 6 Gartendirektor Otto Linne 7Do you ever see a rose in another garden and get that “where have you been all my life” feeling? That’s how it was for me when I met the Gartendirektor. Look at it virtually covered in roses, and oh by the way, these photos were taken in June AND October which goes to show that the “perpetual bloom” it’s described as having is pretty much spot on. What I love best about ‘Gartendirektor Otto Linne’, besides it’s snazzy name, is it’s disease resistance and the fact it’s hardy to zone 4. Sounds like a perfect fit for our no-spray/cold-winter garden. Bred by Peter Lambert in 1934 (Germany) Gartendirektor is a cross between Robin Hood (hybrid musk, Pemberton, 1927) and Rudolph Kluis (R. Kluis, Polyantha, 1922.) It has a mild fragrance, LOTS of thorns (yeah! bring it!) and glossy foliage. In our garden, our Gartendirektor is still a wee thing purchased as a band last autumn and currently staying snug in our garage. I can’t wait to plant out in the garden this spring and watch it take off. More can be found HERE.

  1. Oh that is beautiful! You know I am thinking about getting SDLM again and see if I can keep that one alive lol since its so small I am thinking potted. 🙂

    1. We got rid of ours last autumn but I had the climber and apparently the climber isn’t as good as the shrub? Someday I may replace as well…

  2. Sounds and looks very similar to The Fairy, which I grew in my old garden. I never had any problems with it and it seemed to always be covered in flowers, though those flowers didn’t have any fragrance (as far as I could tell).

    1. I agree–it looks very similar to The Fairy but maybe with a deeper pink coloring. Love those Polyanthas! 🙂
