Celebration of Roses, January 12: Jude the Obscure (AUSjo)

Link to HMF: Jude the Obscure (AUSjo)

Acquired From: David Austin Roses

Own Root? Yes

Would I Grow Again? Yes

Notes: In my garden, not the most prolific bloomer but if you’re looking for a rose with knock-your-socks-off fragrance, this is it. Does well on it’s own roots and is also a great choice for a large container where the blooms can be enjoyed up close.

  1. I have Jude growing next to two Old Wollerton Hall roses and when I compare the two fragrances, OWH smells very unpleasant compared to Jude! So strange huh?! I love Jude’s fragrance and structure.

    1. Not strange at all! Wollerton Old Hall is classified as having a “myrrh” fragrance which many people find a bit unpleasant so you’re not alone there. Jude the Obscure, to me, has a more citrusy-rosy scent which is much nicer in my opinion. 🙂

  2. I love Jude the Obscure as it seems to be a strong and hardy rose. The leaves are a lovely dark green and this rose does not become straggly like some. The perfume definitely has citrus overtones and it’s a profligate flowering rose. I live in Australia and this summer the heat has been extreme, but Jude keeps on keeping on.

    1. Hi Laurel! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences with Jude in your climate. That’s so helpful to learn that it has been doing well for you in the extreme heat. Thank you!

  3. I am so tempted to buy Jude! I would have to grow it in a large pot, terracotta. How has it faired for you in the pot?

Thank you for your post ! Jean

    1. Hi Jean! It’s done very well. I did have some dieback last winter but that’s because I left the pot out. Since it’s own-root, it’s already regrowing. Hope this helps!
