Celebration of Roses, January 13: Lady of Shalott (AUSnyson)

Link to HMF: Lady of Shalott (AUSnyson)

Acquired From: David Austin Roses

Own Root? Both

Would I Grow Again? Yes

Notes: I’ve grown this rose as a graft in a container and as an own-root in the ground and I prefer the former. As own-root, my Lady of Shalott was a dense thicket of many spindly canes and the flowers were smaller and fewer (although no less lovely.) When I grew this as a graft, the shape was more robust and the flowers larger and more frequent. That’s simply my experience. I also think this is another rose that looks fantastic in a container. Lady of Shalott is one of my husband’s favorite roses.

  1. Thank you for posting this (and for all your posts!!) I love the glowing color of Lady of Shalott, but for me it’s been spindly and with small blooms, even though it gets good sun, food and water ( in Portland, the city of roses.) Perhaps it’s the rootstock, which I don’t know about since I bought it many years ago. Still a lovely bloom but may try again with different rootstock.

    1. Hi Susan, welcome! It might be that it’s the own-root version b/c what you’re describing is exactly how mine was: spindly canes (and lots of them) and smallish flowers. Try the grafted and if you can, grow it in a container so you can enjoy the flowers up close! 🙂
