Rounding Up the Strays: Roses Excluded from Celebration of Roses
Nothing wrong with these roses, I just had more than I needed for my Celebration of Roses last month. Of this collection, many are still in small containers brought with us to our new PA garden and some were left behind. Any questions feel free to ask away in the comments! Tropicana? Ours is an orange-pink hybrid tea, disease-prone but fragrant, and long-lasting in a vase. It’s one of the first roses we bought years ago, and I still love it! Is this an instance of different roses having the same name?
Whoops! Nope that was supposed to say ‘Cabana’. Thanks for catching that, it’s been corrected!
Summer Romance looks amazing – what’s your rating on that one for disease resistance and vigor?
Well…this is one that I chose to leave behind so maybe that answers your question? 😉 Hahaha, seriously, though, the disease resistance was absolutely fine but I felt like, even though it was one of the first roses I planted, it just never was much of a bloomer. Since pink roses are so common, I thought I could do better with something else. (Actually I have my eye on the Kordes ‘Cinderella Fairy Tale‘ it was so pretty at Biltmore. Do you grow that one?
I was wondering! Thanks for the feedback – I don’t grow Cinderella Fairy Tale, but I have heard good things about that one as well. Have fun planning and planting your new garden space! I’m looking forward to seeing what you do!
Thanks Cole! 🙂
I’ve considered Moore’s Striped Rugosa, but never got around to that one. That bloom is lovely though. I’ve just ordered Sombreuil…
Sombreuil is such a pretty little thing. Those years I lived in NC I thought maybe mine was a weakling but then I learned, of course, that the voles were eating all the roots of my roses so maybe that explains why it never took off. Funnily enough, I think like the graceful blue/green foliage even more than the flowers!
ps My Moore’s Striped kicked the bucket.
Thank you for telling me about your Moore’s striped. I love my stripes, but I’m running out of room! I think I’ll focus on his minis. If they are smaller, I can have more right! I hope you brought cuttings of Madame Ernest Calvat for the new garden. I have her (thanks to your recommendation) and I adore her.
Oh I’m so pleased you are enjoying Mme Calvat! Thank you for letting me know! 🙂
I took out 3 Summer Romance bushes last year. They were disappointing. I have Cinderella Fairy Tale in 3 different parts of the garden. They’re a good 6+’, even in my z5 climate. I like the vase shape of the bush.
Thank you for weighing in! I’m relieved I’m not the only one who was a bit disappointed with Summer Romance….and now I’m definitely going to get a CFT rose as soon as possible!
Funny about Plum Perfect. It does well in my z5, but I have a friend in PA who really knows roses and can’t get his to grow or bloom. Must be the amount of rain. Seems like it’s always raining where he is, and it’s dry as dust here, otherwise, our climates are similar.
What is the negative about Belle Poitevine? I don’t have it, but have thought about it.
Whoops I think I need to clear up the confusion: there’s nothing “wrong” with any of these roses I just didn’t have enough days in January to include them in my Celebration of Roses….so on that note…
My Plum Perfect is awesome, I love it. I have two of them that are own-root and teeny tiny but they both bloomed very nicely. I’m looking forward to seeing how they do this summer as they mature. But that’s interesting about your friend in PA who is not having success with it. Just goes to show how there are no two gardens that are the same!
Belle Poitevine is a wonderful rose! It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite Rugosas. 🙂
