Historic Newport
I think if I were ever to live right in the center of town I would want it to be in a neighborhood such as this–beautiful, historic Newport. If it weren’t for the telephone poles and cars, it would have felt like we stepped back in time. I love Colonial architecture; Jesse laughed when I told him I subscribed to Colonial Homes Magazine for the longest time (wish it was still around) but seriously, if it were a toss-up between a Storybook home and a Colonial home it would be tough choice for me. I know I sound like a broken record but I wish I had taken more photos on this trip. Please don’t let this measly handful of photos fool you–there is so much more to see. My favorite bits were the tiny alleys tucked between the homes, the quaint cottage-style gardens, but most of all the paint colors! I’d love to see more in-town restorations like this rather than the cookie-cutter homes in urban sprawl, wouldn’t you?
Ok, so technically that center photo of the stone gatehouse isn’t in the historic downtown section of Newport but on that long drive where all the fancy mansions are–I just couldn’t resist including it because look how awesome it is! Next post is one you won’t want to miss, fellow rose lovers. On our way home we visited the oldest public rose garden in America. Wait ’til you see this…
How charming! While we only have a handful of pre-1860s buildings in Little Rock, we have an abundance of beautiful Victorian-era homes in the Quapaw Quarter and around the Governor’s Mansion. You’ve inspired me to take a trip downtown one afternoon and explore! I’m a new reader, but I love your blog and photography. Always a visual treat!
Hi Elizabeth, welcome! Thank you for saying such wonderful things, that’s so very kind of you. 🙂 I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed this post and hope you have a fun adventure! Stop back sometime to let us know what you discovered…
Love that gatehouse!! What a nice trip!
Dawn, you would have flipped your lid over some of those houses, ahem, mansions. There wasn’t any place to pull over and they just went whizzing by so I wasn’t able to get any photos of them but oh, man….
What a wonderful place! Perhaps you’ll be able to go back sometime and explore it further. Love your photos :-).
Thank you Louise! I hope we can get back there someday, too–or at the least get back to New England. We feel very fortunate for this quick trip, though!
Wow – love those colors and how it all works together! Beautiful!
I love it, too!
I agree, I love the older homes, so much history! Cookie-cutter homes are so blah. Your photos are fantastic! I love the colors too. That’s one of the things I remember so well from our visit to MA in 2008. There are few colonial homes left in NJ but when I see one, I’m immediately enchanted!
Thank you for your comment, Jo! 🙂 Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to tour the insides of some of these homes?
Charming only begins to describe these homes !
True beauties !
These photos take you to another time…so well done. 😉
