Celebration of Roses, January 11: James Galway (AUScrystal)

Acquired From: David Austin Roses
Own Root? Both
Would I Grow Again? Yes
Notes: I had several of these roses at our NC garden, both as own-root and grafted and they did equally well. This is a stunning rose. Shade tolerant, disease-resistant, fragrant flowers which also make good cuts. I think this is one of David Austin’s best!
Hi! On your second to last photo here, what is the rose on the left, cascading over (it looks white and apricot in your photo). I am about to order 3 more climbers… and I already have too many to list. Do you have a favorite? I am Zone 9b in Northern California. I try to avoid whites because of thrips, but I have many light colored ones.
I know just what you mean about those pesky thrips! They’re so annoying. (Get some green lacewing larvae going in your garden–they really help with that.) Anyways, the rose you mentioned is called ‘Ghislaine de Féligonde’ it’s a rambler that, for me, only blooms once/year. I’m trying a new one this spring from David Austin called ‘Malvern Hills’ that looks very similar to my eye and is supposed to be disease resistant and a prolific bloomer. I’ll report back with results!
