The Lilac Walk at Penn State University
You could look back at anything I’ve written in the month of January and without fail I am complaining about the weather. I’m not going to do that this time–see? it only took me 11+ years for this kind of personal growth–and just jump right to the lilacs. The eye candy we all need this time of year!
It’s always around this point in winter that I start thinking about lilacs, these jewels of spring, and plan which ones I’m going to try and find for the garden. Last spring, I visited this historical home’s garden sale and picked up an old beauty which still thrives at our former home. Now that we’ve moved, I need a new one!
I’d really like to put in a ‘President Lincoln’ which has the prettiest blue flowers but there really are so many to choose from. First I need to determine which part of our new garden gets the most light since there’s one thing a lilac needs to flower it’s best and that’s SUN.
These photos? Jesse and I are fortunate to live quite close to Penn State (main campus) and take a lot of walks there. In May, the lilacs that are planted along a walkway next to the library come into full flower and are just amazing. I took photos of them last May and would love to share them with you to remind us of better days ahead. Enjoy!
We lost our Lincoln lilac when we moved back south. No good varieties for humid central Virginia, right?
Hmm I can’t say for certain but when we were living in NC there were lots of the Common Lilacs around and of course Korean Lilacs would probably do well for you! 🙂
Your photos are beautiful. I took many pictures of my lilacs, but cannot quite capture how dreamily lovely they are. Do you have any hints?
Thank you so much, Margaret! I think they photograph nicely if you catch them at the end of the day (the “golden hour”) which gives them a more dreamy quality. Hope this helps! 🙂
