Ready for their close-up

A collection of roses wait for their photo-shoot

I’m writing this to you from my bench in the basement. I’m supposed to be working right now.

Shhhhhh, don’t tell anyone I’m here.

I have oodles and oodles of new photos to share with you. It’s like all of a sudden, blam! Everything’s blooming. But since I have a to-do list a mile long, no extra pics today–just some gardeny updates.

Most excitingly, there is a song sparrow nest right outside my front door/window and the babies hatched a couple of days ago. So now, I get to hear them going “cheep! cheep! cheep!” frantically every time the parents return with food. The mamma and pappa hunt for bugs in our container rose garden. It is most awesome that they’re doing this–it’s significantly cut down on the number of sawfly larvae I usually have this time of year.

The bluebirds left a couple of weeks ago. One day they were nesting and the next day up and left. Since then, a pair of wrens moved into their abandoned home and are making a nest. I’m sad the bluebirds are gone (although they visited the birdbath the other day so I know they’re still “around”) but those wrens are too cute for words.

Have I told you how many roses we’ve lost this spring? Yes, so many of my little banded roses kicked the bucket when we had those alternating temps earlier this month. They shouldn’t have been delivered so soon to our area–totally my fault–but I added a few replacements. (That’s why my current rose list keeps fluctuating, but hopefully it’s settled down now.)

We’ve almost got our new sunflower patch completed. Already I realize that it’s way too small for the number of sunflowers I am planting in there. This could either be really amazing or an epic failure. We’ll see come July or so how it pans out.

There are several roses that are new to me and I am completely in awe over (‘La Reine’ I’m looking at you) and a few more that are covered with buds and I simply cannot wait for them to bloom.

What about you? Are you looking forward to anything specific in your garden?

    1. How lovely! Don’t you just adore these romantic old rose names? Sure beats something like ‘Ketchup and Mustard’. I’m going to have to try out Angel Gardens sometime!

      1. I know really Ketchup and Mustard I hope it doesn’t smell like it too :P… You mean those old romantic names that look pretty but you can’t pronounce lol yea I do it gives them character and a mission to figure out how to say it HAHA

        1. I know just what you mean! I feel like I’m back in french class again when I try to pronounce so many of them–which I know I’m probably doing incorrectly–but I love it. Sometimes I buy roses just for their pretty names. 🙂

  2. I lost ‘Easy Does It’ f which breaks my heart, it was my favorite last year. I may be losing my first ‘Queen Elizabeth’ g too but we’ll see. I love Sunflowers and can’t wait to see how yours turn out!

    1. Oh boo, I’m sorry to hear about your roses! If it makes you feel any better, we’ve lost so many this spring. It’s been such rough weather, hasn’t it? I hope these sunflowers work out, too! 🙂
