Growing Knee-High Blend Sweet Peas (Lathyrus odoratus)
Lathyrus odoratus ‘Knee-Hi Blend’ available through Botanical Interests. Last photo includes Austin’s Rosa ‘William Shakespeare 2000’
Every year I like to try a new variety of sweet pea as they’re one of my favorite flowers; they’re right up there with roses, of course, and lavender. This Knee High Blend consists of shades of purple, white and red on a very short vine–less than 3 feet! I have these planted in a container with an attached 3′ high trellis (I’d show you the whole kit and caboodle but it overlooks the neighbor’s driveway and their billion cars so I’ll spare you that). This variety could also be planted in a container sans trellis and allowed to cascade. I may try that next year along with another new variety. The stems are long enough for a vase and the scent is what you’d expect from a sweet pea. Completely intoxicating. Personal notes? Sow THICKLY. I should have purchased two packets instead of one. Also, these really didn’t get going until the weather got warm which was surprising. They’re blooming their behinds off right now and the temps have been in the 80’s and 90’s so go figure. Do you have a favorite sweet pea variety?
I was thinking about getting some sweet pea seeds but seeds aren’t growing for me for some reason this year…. so maybe next year.
Definitely try again. 🙂
That’s so encouraging. I sowed some sweet peas last summer but they were all dominated by the other flowers I already had growing there. So unfortunately none bloomed for me. Next summer I’ll sow them in a big container and hopefully have a beautiful show. Can’t wait.
Thanks again for choosing my name in the giweaway Laurie!!!
I hope they give you lots and lots of beautiful blooms! 😀
