Celebration of Roses, January 16: Madame Abel Chatenay
Link to HMF: Madame Abel Chatenay
Acquired From: Rosarian, Jim Wilson. Long Ago Roses may carry it.
Own Root? Yes
Would I Grow Again? Hopefully
Notes: I couldn’t bear to leave this one behind so it was dug up and brought with us to PA but I’m not sure it has survived the stress of the move and the winter cold here (although it is in a protected area in our garage.) This rose is slow growing and very sensitive to cold. Mme Chatenay is a fine example of the delicate beauty found in the earlier Hybrid Teas (late 1800’s.)
I was not familiar with this beautiful thing! Early HTs and Teas are roses I adore but too tender for my z5 garden. I’m trying a couple of the hardier teas this year, which is not a typical year – no snow! Well, hardly any . They might make it through this winter, but probably not the winters to come. Just had to try. Such a beautiful class. I hope yours perks up and lives a long, healthy life in PA.
Thank you! Yeah…we’re supposedly 6b here in central PA but from living here before all those years I recall it feeling much, much colder than that. Moving forward, I’m trying to stick to roses that are at least hardy to zone 5 but I made an exception in a few cases telling myself I’ll just put them in the garage for winter. Ha! We’ll see how well that goes. 😉
I’ve always admired this rose, so lovely! May have to try and track it down!!!!!!!💕💫
I think it would do so well in your garden! Linda at Long Ago Roses may still have some in stock if you want to try reaching out to her. 🙂
