It’s Here! Introducing My New Candle Line…

Have you ever started a creative adventure thinking it will just be a fun way to de-stress and then, out of nowhere, it completely consumes you? That happened to me a few months of ago with candle making. It began as a calming craft but it quickly became so much more. In fact, it wasn’t long before I realized that if I wanted to continue learning I would have to find a way to sell some of my candles because there are only so many a person needs or can pawn off on friends and family. So now, here we are, introducing a completely new product line to my shop–which has been mainly jewelry for the past 16 years. Life is crazy!

I can’t believe, though, that after months of trial and error, research and development, the day has finally come to offer these to you. We’re starting out with these mini sets–a great way to try scents out without the commitment of a larger jar. The following sets are currently available: The Autumn Witch Collection, The Dark Academia Collection, The Cozy Café Collection and The Spooky Collection. For each collection, you get four different scents with each tin burning for approximately 10 hours. {EDIT: Collections Sold Out. Individual Sample Tins can still be purchased HERE. Mix and Match to your hearts content!}

The full-sized amber glass jars will begin to become available the last week of August–just in time for back to school and thoughts turning to cozy autumn days. {EDIT: Full-sized amber glass jars available now!} But first, you may be asking yourself, why candles? Well, I’ve always made candles. It’s something I like to do in the fall and give away as gifts. However, I’ve never been that good at it because I never applied any real method. Once I learned how much was involved in making a “proper candle” I was like Alice going down the rabbit hole and my workshop suddenly transformed into what can only be described as a potions studio–very much Professor Snape in his dungeon albeit far less creepy. (My wax melter even looks like a witch’s cauldron which tickles me to no end.)

About the “Shop Signature” Scents and The Collection:

Lavinia’s Ghost – The title for this “Shop Signature” fragrance has been pilfered from the name for a line of jewelry I am currently working on. The jewelry line has been usurped for my candles but it is still in the works. I also wanted a scent that speaks for Hedgerow Rose as a whole and this particular scent, which is a blend of tonka bean, black amber and fresh cut roses is just perfect.

Forbidden Library – My other Shop Signature fragrance is based on the scent that greets Jesse and I when we come home: the sweet perfume of antique books blended with the smokey aroma of a wood-burning fire. Basically, I wanted a fragrance that smelled like home and this is the closest I have come up with.

The Collection: As a Highly Sensitive Person, you can imagine how important good-smelling, non-irritating scents are to me. I said “No” to a lot of fragrance oils that came my way. It was important to me that every candle scent was something that felt unique and had some kind of mysterious element to it that sparked imagination. For example, when concocting the formula for Sleepy Hollow, it took many trials before I landed on a combo of crisp apple, bourbon and just a hint of cedar embers. This blend conjures an image of walking through an autumn wood enshrouded in mists with the sound of ravens cawing in the trees. For Forever October, I wanted a blend that could realistically be burned year-round that evokes a feeling of being snuggled up with a good book in front of the fire on a cold day–a sweet pumpkin roasting in the oven. And really, all of my scents are created with this kind of intention. Even Gingerbread Coffee went through several iterations before I landed on a blend that reminded me of my favorite autumn/winter beverage. Last, it was important that this collection felt cohesive and that, in most cases, you could combo scents up to have complimentary candles burning at the same time. In most cases, these scents pair up beautifully. I would only say perhaps the floral-based scents like Midnight in the Garden and the fresher scents like Herbology and The English Professor are best on their own. I like to blend these candles in my own home for example, Autumn Woods burning at the same time as Butterscotch Apple. But of course, these are all perfect as stand alones.

For now, my collection contains many autumn-inspired scents like All Hallows’ Eve which blends pumpkin with the scents of vanilla cream and roasted marshmallow. But don’t fret, my Winter Collection is currently in the works and I have some real beauties coming your way in November such as: Winter Woods, Yuletide, Tannenbaum and Victorian Christmas. Thank you for letting me share my new candle line with you. It is my intention to produce something that is not only lovely but also meets my expectations for a gorgeous fragrance and environmental friendliness. Plus, it has to be safe–as safe as a combustion engine in a jar could be! It’s such a science–making sure the wick size matches the wax formulation, jar size and fragrance oil percentages so that it burns safely, cleanly and evenly. I am really proud of this collection and honestly this is something I haven’t been this excited about building up from the ground floor since I started my “Estate Collection” jewelry line 16 years ago. I really hope you like it, too.
