The Color Purple

They bloom all the way until frost which pleases the bees and butterflies, I’m sure. I don’t even bother saving the seeds anymore because they seem better off self-sowing and reappearing where they please, thank-you-very-much, as this patch of purple Cosmos did in our garden this year. I can’t see purple Cosmos without thinking of this line by Alice Walker “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.” Perhaps you remember the scene from the movie version of The Color Purple? Here they are walking in a field of purple Cosmos, remember? I’ve grown all different kinds of Cosmos over the years and I think the sea shell kinds with their fluted petals are my favorite although next year I’d like to try something new. (Here’s a post on tips for growing cosmos.) Chocolate Cosmos? Candy Stripes? Which varieties are your favorites?
