The Color Purple
Here in Pennsylvania, Cosmos really comes into it’s own sometime mid August and you’ll see them happily waving their delicate petals in neighborhood gardens, wildflower patches, hedgerows and even along the center divide of bustling highways. They bloom all the way until frost which pleases the bees and butterflies, I’m sure. I don’t even bother saving the seeds anymore because they seem better off self-sowing and reappearing where they please, thank-you-very-much, as this patch of purple Cosmos did in our garden this year. I can’t see purple Cosmos without thinking of this line by Alice Walker “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.” Perhaps you remember the scene from the movie version of The Color Purple? Here they are walking in a field of purple Cosmos, remember? I’ve grown all different kinds of Cosmos over the years and I think the sea shell kinds with their fluted petals are my favorite although next year I’d like to try something new. (Here’s a post on tips for growing cosmos.) Chocolate Cosmos? Candy Stripes? Which varieties are your favorites?
What beautiful photos! I love those scenes in The Color Purple! I think Cosmos are one of those flowers that look good from any angle….really a stunner!
Thank you Dawn! They’re easy to grow, easy to photograph. 🙂
Those photos are absolutely GORGEOUS! All of your pictures are, but these just really stand out!
And I would love to grow some Cosmos – think they would in FL?
Thank you so much, Andrea! Yes, I think they would work in your area–they’re one of the easiest annuals to grow!
Somehow I thought you were English, but you are American :-)! The photo’s you made of the Cosmos look beautiful. I only have a few flowers in my garden this year, whereas last year I had a huge patch. Miss is terribly!!
Happy sunday!
